Help, Hope and Edification

There has been a lot of talk about the soaring temperatures this summer. What is the biggest concern when it comes to the dangerous heat?

Things you need to remember that are commonly discussed are:

1) Staying hydrated – In fact reports on preparedness have said to try to make sure that you are adequately hydrated the day or days before you will be outside for hours in 90 degrees fahrenheit plus.

2) Utilize the shade or make your own with a hat that provides shade like a cap or bucket hat, umbrellas (parasols) or tents.

3) Wear sweat wicking clothing for moisture wicking or loose fitting,  light colored clothing.

4) Take breaks if working outside and use a travel mug or bottle to drink water. You could also drink beverages that replace electrolytes.

Less frequently discussed is the reason behind the week-long or more heat emergency that has been reported on.  When the humidity gets extremely high (70% and higher), the tolerable temperature is greatly affected.

According to a PBS report, the tolerable temperature could drop as low as 80 degrees fahrenheit as the humidity rises towards 100%. If that turns out to be true, it’s really alarming because alerts may be omitted as low as 80 degrees especially if they don’t consider extreme humidity. The reasons for the additional danger is the lost of the ability for sweat evaporation to occur effectively enough to cool the body down at those extremely high levels of humidity in the air. The body could also potentially lose hydration quicker than you can replace it, especially if you are very effective at sweating.

This all points to the combination of heat and humidity mattering more than you think. This information gives added credibility to the saying that “It’s not the heat but the humidity”.

There are, as mentioned earlier, things that can be done.  Additionally there are some great devices like cool misting fans that can help with the heat that I didn’t know existed in a small, personal size. If I find some to recommend, I will update the post or write another one. You can, however, get some wicking clothing, shade providing hats and caps and travel mugs at vgsitesandcreatives.com.
