Springtime is a good time to be reminded or to remind your family of your safety plans. It is also a good time for some spring time home safety tips. First, here are some year-round important safety tips to keep in mind.
1. Get carbon monoxide detectors even if you have electric appliances. This is to protect you from carbon monoxide poisoning. Ideally, get one for each bedroom.
2. If you live in a multilevel home, you should have an escape ladder on the top floor. Ideally, you should have one in every bedroom on the upper level(s) in case of a fire.
3. If you have an attached garage, do not run your car inside of it. Pull out onto the driveway immediately after starting the car. If you need to wait for someone, do it on the driveway. This is to help prevent carbon monoxide poisoning and to keep it at a safe level in your home.
4. If you have gas appliances, make sure the top burners and oven light within approximately 1 – 2 seconds. Make sure that kids don’t operate the stove unsupervised. ( Ask an appliance technician for advice on cleaning or maintenance questions .)
5. Open your windows and doors periodically. Run the fan or turn on the fan setting on the thermostat, if you are not using the AC or heat frequently, to improve interior air quality in the home.
Some Spring time home safety tips are:
1. Check / replace those smoke detector batteries. If you have wired ones , test them.
2. Review the plan to escape the home in an emergency. Make sure your kids have a safety contact, other than you, in an emergency.
3. If you don’t have a plan, make one and each of you follow it. You don’t want to be searching for each other before leaving unsure of what to do.
4. If hiding is a plan for an intruder emergency, make sure your kids know not to do this in a fire. In other words, make sure they know that there is a different plan for different emergencies.
5. Have drills for your different emergencies.
These lists are not intended to be considered all inclusive. Police and Fire departments information services, etc.. are great sources for safety information.
There is also fire safety equipment, that is recommended by a former firefighter, such as fire blankets, ponchos and other items to consider. View some and consider purchasing via this link.
